Foster’s History

Foster’s Hotel, Restaurant, and Saloon has been around since 1881 and is the oldest commercial building in Chama, New Mexico. Of course, it wasn’t always a hotel, restaurant, and saloon, but, since its opening, it has been home to a convenient store, gas station, brothel (crazy huh?!) and a hotel, restaurant, and saloon (obviously).

It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and because of its incredible history is rumored to be haunted!

The current Foster’s Hotel, Restaurant, and Saloon was cultivated by the former owner, Alice B. Nuno. Alice was the owner of Foster’s for almost 40 years before her passing in 2016. She was born in Canjilon, New Mexico in 1933 and moved to Chama, New Mexico in 1976 with her family. She began her career as a restauranteur in 1977 when she opened a small fast food cafe called the Busy Bee. Learning as she went, she made it a success and began to think about expanding. In 1979, Foster’s became available for lease and since it was bigger and what she was looking for, Alice jumped at the opportunity! She began leasing the property and after three years of hard work and determination, she was able to finally purchase her dream. She was also able to pay for necessary renovations to preserve the historical landmark!

After Alice passed away, her four daughters, Anna, Rosario, Rebecca, and Josefina have continued her incredible legacy. They are continuing to grow and renovate Foster’s and have helped to establish Foster’s Hotel, Restaurant, and Saloon as a favorite in the Chama community!
